Botox can be the best treatment for modern life

Botox® CosmeticThere’s been a lot of discussion in print, broadcast and online about the effects that social media has had on the growth of cosmetic procedures. It seems that since we’re taking (and sharing) a lot more photos, we are more aware of our appearance flaws. Plus, we’re smiling and making various facial expressions for photos more often than at any time in history, and we all know that using our facial muscles is part of what causes wrinkles.

Luckily, we are also hearing and reading about the many procedures available that can help us look better — in pics and person. But all that exposure to information can be stressful, and stress takes a toll on the skin, further driving up our interest in anti-aging treatments. And for those of us who are spending more time than ever accessing information on our phones, we may be squinting to read it, which contributes to lines around the eyes.

It might seem like a vicious cycle, but Botox can be a solution, custom made for times like these.

Botox to the rescue
For some people reading this, they might be realizing they’re overdue for their Botox treatments. Call for your appointment today: (415) 788-3800.

If you haven’t yet discovered the benefits of Botox, are you finding yourself clicking on more articles about it? If so, you aren’t alone. Online searches and inquiries about Botox are steadily climbing, according to reports from Google and other search engines.

The steep growth in the use of Botox

It may have to do with the many additional ways the product is being employed to help us manage problems of modern life. More than just relaxing the lines and creases that form on the face, Botox has also been shown to have many other uses, including:

  • Helping to alleviate tension headaches and migraines
  • Reducing symptoms of over-active bladder
  • Halting sweat production in the armpits and palms
  • Treating nerve pain

More amazing news about Botox
New research suggests it may promote the production of elastin and collagen, which help make youthful skin tight, firm and flexible.

Lasers can safely and effectively remove unwanted hair

laser hair removalThere’s a fairly simple treatment that could help get you ready for summer weather, and now’s a great time to get started. Laser hair removal can be performed anywhere on the face and body, regardless of your skin type, and you won’t have to be self-conscious about unwanted hair again. Start your treatments by making an appointment today. Call  (415) 788-3800.

A brief explanation of how laser hair removal works

  • The laser emits a beam of high-intensity light that penetrates deep into the skin.
  • A hand-piece touches the skin to deliver the laser light.
  • This high-intensity light delivers a controlled amount of heat.
  • The heat is attracted to the pigment in hair follicles.
  • This allows the laser light to target and destroy the hair follicle
  • There is no damage to the surrounding skin.

The two different lasers we have at Aura are used specific to the patient’s skin type

  1. Candela GentleLASE,

This is a long-pulse alexandrite wavelength for fair skin.

  1. Cutera CoolGlide

This is a YAG wavelength ideal for the darker skin.

The number of necessary treatments also depends on you

Your skin color, hair coarseness and the laser used will determine how many treatments can give you the desired results. Most patients require six sessions at about four to eight-week intervals for effective reduction of hair, and additional sessions may be needed to achieve optimal results. Each treatment can take from a few minutes up to an hour, depending on the area being treated.

The time between treatments will depend on the areas you are treating

  • Face – four weeks
  • Bikini area– six weeks
  • Legs – eight weeks

The type of skin and hair you have will determine how many sessions you need

  • Lighter skin and darker hair can often require fewer sessions.
  • Darker skin may require more sessions.
  • Blond, red, gray or white hair doesn’t respond to laser treatment because there’s no pigment in the hair follicle to attract the laser heat.

Our cooling methods will help control any discomfort

We use specific methods designed to cool the skin and reduce discomfort:

  • The Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD)
  • Cold gel
  • Chill-tip hand-piece

Reversing the signs of Aging is easier than ever

wrinkle treatmentThese days, surgery is no longer the only way to fight aging and turn back the hands of time. Non-surgical procedures have gained popularity due to the results that can be achieved — almost immediately, with less pain and little downtime.

Continual advances in anti-aging without surgery

At Aura we can offer our clients a full array of advanced and modern non-surgical cosmetic treatments, including these five:

  1. Filler injections

Filling and plumping the skin can improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and sag.

  1. Botox injections

Perhaps the most popular non-surgical skin procedure, Botox is widely used by women and men. Botox is injected into certain facial muscles to paralyze them, preventing the extreme expressions that etch the face with lines and folds. Results are visible in one to two weeks and can last about six months.

  1. Fraxel Dual

This laser procedure provides skin resurfacing, effectively treating both the skin’s surface and deeper layers. The treatment can help restore your skin to a more youthful appearance by encouraging the growth of new healthy tissue. The procedure can reduce and eliminate sunspots and wrinkles, as well as improve the appearance of acne scars, skin texture and the mask of pregnancy.

  1. Intense Pulsed Light Therapy

The IPL Photorejuvenation or PhotoFacial treats the damaged superficial layer of the skin and delivers thermal energy to treat deeper tissue. The treatment works to stimulate collagen production and resurface your skin without damaging it.

  1. Thermage

This radio frequency procedure can be used to treat the upper and lower eyelids, to smooth lines and wrinkles on the face and neck, and even to smooth skin on the body and improve the appearance of cellulite.

Side effects shouldn’t last long

Non-surgical treatments can cause some swelling, redness, and itchiness, often disappearing within a few hours to a few days post-procedure.

Shining a (laser) light on your unsightly veins

Vein TreatmentFor the past several months, your jeans and sweat pants have been helping you hide a problem – your varicose and spider veins. But it’s almost time for your legs to make their warm weather appearance, and the idea might have you alarmed. We can help.

Shorts weather is right around the corner. Your legs can be ready

You don’t have to live with unsightly leg veins. At Aura, we can provide safe and effective treatment that can reduce and even eliminate unwanted spider and varicose veins.

Our laser system can be used to treat a wide range of leg veins

We can treat everything from superficial spider to deeper varicose veins. The procedure is fairly quick, virtually painless (a stinging or snapping sensation) and requires little to no down time. You can likely resume all your normal activities immediately and only need to avoid rigorous activities for about 24 hours after treatment.

The laser delivers pulses of light energy

This causes the blood within the treated vein to coagulate, eventually destroying the vessel. Over time, your body will reabsorb it. Our laser treatments can be used for:

  • Small, facial veins (telangiectasia)
  • Spider veins on the legs
  • Large blue veins on the legs
  • Almost any area of the body

Laser vein treatments take about 15 minutes per visit

The number of sessions required can vary, depending on:

  • Number of veins being treated
  • Number of areas being treated
  • Color of veins being treated
  • Size of vessels being treated

One to two laser sessions are usually sufficient, and individual results will vary.

See results by summer

Most of our patients report that their veins show significant improvement after about two to six weeks post procedure. For some, it can take several months. That’s why this is an ideal time to start getting rid of unwanted veins, just in time for summer clothing and activities.

Get a free evaluation

Our board certified physicians can examine your unwanted veins to help determine which veins can be treated and the right treatment plan for you. Call for your evaluation appointment today: (415) 788-3800.

Is a chemical peel what your skin needs?

chemical peelAccording to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), chemical peels are among the most popular nonsurgical cosmetic procedures.

Chemical peels can remove the damaged outer layers of your skin

Using varying strengths of acids, a chemical peel can remove the top, damaged layer of your skin to reveal the smoother, younger-looking layer beneath. You may choose to have a chemical peel to:

  • Reduce the appearance of scars
  • Treat blemishes
  • Smooth your skin
  • Even out your complexion

The strength or your peel can be tailored to your skin’s needs and your preference

The more noticeable you want your results to be, the deeper the chemical peel you’ll need. Light and medium peels are fairly painless, though you may feel a slight stinging from the chemicals. After, you can also go about your normal activities as long as you use sunscreen. Your skin should be protected from the sun for several months after any chemical peel to protect your skin and maintain results.

At Aura Skin we feature four types of chemical peels

  1. Alphahydroxy acid (AHA)

The gentlest type of chemical peel, it uses glycolic, lactic and fruit acids to help smooth and brighten skin. The AHA peel treats:

  • Fine lines
  • Dryness
  • Uneven pigmentation
  • Acne
  1. Trichloroacetic acid (TCA)

This medium peel also treats fine surface wrinkles, blemishes and pigment issues. It can be used on the face, neck and other areas.

  1. Phenol

The strongest chemical peel, it can treat:

  • Deeper wrinkles
  • Precancerous growths
  • Blotchiness
  • Sun damage
  • Freckles
  • Uneven pigment due to aging and hormonal changes
  1. The Vitalize Peel – alpha and betahydroxy, resorcinol and retinoic acids

For people with sensitive skin, this light peel can gently slough away the outermost layers of the skin to help reduce the signs of aging. This peel helps:

  • Improve texture
  • Restore a youthful glow
  • Reduce fine lines
  • Lighten sun damage
  • Treat acne

You should expect to notice the improvement in your skin’s texture and tone and a reduction of fine lines. A healthier, more youthful appearance is best accomplished with seen a series of peels.

Giving your skin a more youthful appearance

botoxOur patients come to us for procedures and treatments because they want results, and we work hard to deliver. We know you’re also interested in results that come with little pain and minimal down time. That’s why non-surgical procedures continue to grow in popularity.

Lots of things hurt your skin. We can help

The skin is designed to protect you from sun, wind, cold and heat. But over time, the elements (and time itself) show up as wrinkles, lines, and spots. Damaged skin symptoms also create the appearance of aged skin, and you might even appear older than you are. But these days, we can repair many of the signs of skin aging.

Unlike surgical procedures, skin “treatments” are considered superficial, but they can provide noticeable results more quickly and require less pain and recovery time. Here are two of the most popular and effective non-surgical treatments that can virtually update your skin:

Injections

  • Botox

By paralyzing the muscle groups responsible for some of your facial expressions, Botox can smooth out many of the wrinkles in your face. Numbing the muscle allows your skin also to relax, which diminishes the appearance of the wrinkles in the effected areas. Done properly, the results look natural and last for several months. The Botox injection procedure typically takes just a few minutes and shouldn’t prevent you from immediately returning to your normal activities. You may experience some redness, swelling and bruising at the injection site, but that should resolve in a few days.

  • Fillers

As we age, our skin is affected by various factors, including gravity. Wrinkles and saggy skin appear because our skin no longer has the youthful elasticity that allows it to “bounce back.” Injectable fillers are designed to correct the appearance of loose, crinkly skin by adding volume in areas where it has been lost. Some of our most popular fillers brands are composed of hyaluronic acid, a substance found naturally in the body. Hyaluronic-based fillers, such as Juvederm and Restylane, can also stimulate your collagen production.

February is laser love month

laser treatmentsWhen it comes to anti-aging and skin care, laser treatments are considered one of the most effective ways to improve your skin’s texture. Most experts agree that a large part of the skin changes we experience are due to sun damage, which leaves the skin spotted and leathery.

Laser treatments can reverse some of the results of sun damage  – and a whole lot more. As with any other type of cosmetic procedure, however, it’s good to do your homework and learn about the different options that are available and what they can (and can’t) do for you.

Resurfacing the outer layer of your skin

Depending on your particular skin issues, type and color, a certain laser will be used to send a beam of energy beneath your skin to resurface the outer layer, as well as stimulate the production of new collagen.

Winter is the best time for laser treatments

When your skin has had laser treatments such as laser hair removal, it’s really important that you don’t expose any of that new, delicate skin to the sun.

There may be downtime
The more invasive the laser, the longer it’s going to take for your skin to recover and return to its natural (though improved) appearance.

  • No downtime – skin redness or pinkness will be gone in less than one day
  • Minimal downtime — one to three days
  • Moderate downtime — a few days to one week
  • Significant downtime — at least a week

There are many different types of lasers and treatment levels

Non-ablative (medium strength) lasers, such as Clear+Brilliant, are gentler than ablative (the most heavy-duty) lasers. Light lasers can be used for minimal pigment problems and usually involve no downtime because the treatment doesn’t break the skin, but usually need to be performed more than once in order to achieve your desired results.

Maintaining your results

In order to protect your results, keep your skin out of the sun. Wear sunscreen every day, plus, plan on having periodic laser treatments in the future.

Step into our office (and you can look younger)

anti-aging goals Some of the most effective ways to fight the signs of aging and restore a more youthful appearance have nothing to do with plastic surgery. These days, more and more people are achieving their anti-aging goals with a fairly quick office visit causing little to no pain or downtime. Here are three common issues that our patients are solving without going under the knife, and so can you:

1.) Deep wrinkles in the forehead
. Surgical solution — brow lift
The procedure pulls up the forehead using incisions made in the scalp
. Non-surgical solution – Botox injections
When botulinum toxin is injected into a muscle, it temporarily relaxes it. This can temporarily smooth and even eliminate forehead lines caused by facial expression, sun damage and aging.
. Preventive solution – Botox
Many facial wrinkles are formed by the natural repetitive muscle contractions that happen when we make facial expression, from laughing to crying. Botox injections can be used to pre-treat areas that are still smooth and wrinkle-free, but are known to be prone to forming deep lines, such as around the eyes, between the brows and in the forehead. Early intervention with Botox injections can prevent creases from forming in the first place.

2.) Thinning lips and vertical lines
. Surgical solution – lip implants
. Non-surgical solution – filler injections
Hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Juvéderm can be used to shape and increase the size of the upper and lower lip for a more youthful, plump appearance. Filler can also be used to improve the appearance of your lips by filling in the lines and crevices that can be the results of smoking, sun exposure, aging and genetics.

3.) Smile lines (nasolabial folds)
. Surgical solution – facelift
. Non-surgical solution – filler injections
Both Juvéderm and Restylane (also a hyaluronic filler) can treat the deep crevices and sagging that can appear around the mouth. The office visit for injections takes around 20 minutes and results can last up to a year. Restylane has also been shown to trigger the body’s own collagen production, which helps support the skin and improve its appearance.

Botulinum toxin, take a bow!

BOTOXAccording to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, (ASAPS), Botox Cosmetic (and its sister products Dysport and Xeomin) is the number one nonsurgical cosmetic procedure, and has been for over 15 years now. Last year alone, some four million injections were performed.

Whether you’re a Botox beginner, a long-term user, or still just thinking about it, you may have some concerns related to the pros and cons of using this popular, effective treatment for wrinkles (and headaches, incontinence, excessive sweating and more).

The truth about a safe toxin
Botox has been used since the year 2000, and was approved by the FDA in 2002. It’s considered one of the safest treatments available. Simply put, Botox works by blocking the signal from the nerves to the muscles. This relaxing of the injected muscles is what cause wrinkles and furrows to smooth out. The neurotransmitter eventually recovers from the paralyzing effect of the treatment, so results are not permanent. And the product is ultimately eliminated from the body. There is no documented case of the effects of Botox NOT wearing off.

Botox shouldn’t cause you to appear expressionless or frozen
Today’s Botox user wants to look naturally rested and relaxed, and we are skilled in using the product to help you achieve your aesthetic goals. Most patients want the outcome to go practically unnoticed. You can look like yourself, only better. An unwanted and telltale sign of overdoing Botox injections is eyebrows that don’t move when you talk, which isn’t normal. When injections are administered with skill and experience, most people won’t even know you’ve had treatment.

How much is enough?
Everyone is different, so to be on the safe side, get a small dose the first time around. The results won’t last as long, but it’s good to test your tolerance and any changes to your appearance.

Timing is everything
In about three to seven days, you should see results that can last three to four months. Downtime can be the result of light bruising, which can last a week to 10 days. So plan your injections accordingly. Make an appointment today by calling: (415) 788-3800.

Radiesse Tells Your Smile Lines They’re Not Funny

RadiesseAging isn’t for the meek; it’s an unrelenting march, day after day. Your collagen supply drops year by year and with it your skin’s support mechanism. Volume leaves your cheeks. Your skin loses it elasticity and allows for wrinkles to find a home. Bogus.

But you don’t have to take aging as a matter of fact. At Aura Skin Spa, we help our patients fight back with Radiesse, the long-lasting, dual action volumizing filler.

While you may not have heard of Radiesse in the galaxy of popular fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane, and Perlane, we love Radiesse at Aura, particularly when addressing smile and marionette lines.

How does Radiesse work?

While fillers such as Juverderm are hyaluronic acid fillers (where hyaluronic acid binds with water molecules to plump and hydrate the skin), Radiesse is different. It is comprised of calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres suspended in an aqueous gel carrier.

Radiesse works two ways. First the aqueous gel instantly fills the area when injected beneath a crease or wrinkle. The body starts to absorb the gel, but the CaHA microspheres then provide structural support for the skin. But that’s only the first part of its function. The hydroxylapatite microspheres then stimulate the body to produce new collagen in the injection area. This occurs in the weeks following your injection and the results last for a year or more. So, while most fillers lose their function once the body absorbs them, Radiesse, because it initiates the building of new collagen, continues to show its effects even after the microspheres and gel are absorbed. That’s why we’re big Radiesse fans at Aura.

What does it work on?

Radiesse is a volumizing filler, meaning it is effective for replacing volume and for deeper wrinkles such as those around the mouth. Here are the areas that we treat with Radiesse.

Smile lines — Also known as nasolabial folds, these lines run from the nose down to the corners of the mouth. They are the result of decreasing facial volume and skin elasticity that comes with aging.

Marionette lines — While these lines may be necessary for ventriloquist dummies, they’re not good for you. These lines run straight downward from the corners of the mouth and can make you look unhappy. These also result from decreasing volume.

Corners of the mouth — Also known as oral commissures, the corners of your mouth can turn downward as you age and lose volume below the mouth. This phenomenon can make you look as if you’re frowning or mad.

Pre-jowl area — The areas on each side of the chin, the pre-jowl sulcus, can hollow out due to sagging in other areas of the lower face.

Chin wrinkles — Chin wrinkles form horizontally across the chin and can be distracting to a person talking to you. Volume loss in the lower face again is the culprit.

Interested in addressing the list above? Call the team at Aura Skin Spa, 415-788-3800, and ask about Radiesse.
