Fat Reduction San Francisco, CA

The Time for Cellulite Has Come to an End

Fat Reduction San Francisco, CAThere is no good time for cellulite. This is not a condition that “runs its course” and then ends. It is a sticky situation that can linger for many years. Because cellulite inhibits a woman’s confidence in what she wears, or how she looks when wearing shorts and skirts, it’s a topic we need to discuss.

We know that, by and large, women have long wished for a way to reduce the appearance of cellulite. They have been handed far too many remedies to list here. No need to, because many of them are based on misconceptions about what cellulite is and why it exists. We’ll share with you what we do know about cellulite, and what progress has been made in banishing the bulge.

  • We see the evidence of cellulite on the skin, but the problem lies beneath the surface. Skin dimpling occurs when fat tissue pushes against connective bands called septae.
  • Cellulite relates to fat tissue, but it isn’t a fat problem. Women of all shapes and sizes struggle with this issue. Losing weight might help. Conversely, losing weight might also make cellulite look more prominent. Frustrating, we know. This is not a reason to not eat well and exercise often. Over time, muscle-toning can have a positive effect on cellulite.
  • Liposuction will not help cellulite. Because fat isn’t the problem, there is very little value in turning to liposuction for smoother skin.
  • Cellulite is largely a woman’s problem to manage. Men have septae, too, but the pattern of tissue is denser in male anatomy; a crisscross. These bands travel in a vertical pattern through a woman’s body, providing more space through which fat tissue can push.

There is Hope in New Technologies

In the past decade, we have seen an enormous forward-movement in the area of aesthetic medicine. Topical solutions for cellulite have been formulated, though dramatic results have not been seen from such products. Additionally, radiofrequency and light-based technologies have been developed. In our San Francisco med spa, we harness these modalities, as well as the power of gentle vacuum action, in the VelaShape device.

3 Easy Ways to Protect Your Skin Against Acne

acne treatment San Francisco, CAAcne might as well be called the plague of your skin. Caused by a variety of different things including hormones, stress, and excess oil, acne can drop your self-esteem from a ten to a zero in no time. Luckily, we at Aura Med Spa have a variety of different treatments that we can use to help fight active acne and get rid of scars in the process. To take things one step further and protect your skin, try using these following tips in addition to our services. Read on to learn more.

Wash Your Face

One of the easiest and most efficient ways to protect your skin from acne is to wash your face at least a few times a day. By getting rid of germs, bacteria, and extra oil across your skin, you can cut down on any acne.

Clean Your Makeup Brushes

You may not realize it, but your makeup brushes harbor more germs and bacteria than you may care to admit— causing extra breakouts in the process. Try cleaning your makeup brushes every three to four weeks on average. To clean your brushes, use an antibacterial face soap and warm water. Then, combine the two and rub your brushes in a circular motion to extract any excess makeup. Repeat until your brushes are completely clean.

Choose Gentle Products

Depending on how severe your acne is, you may not need to use products that contain ingredients like salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. Although these ingredients are great at getting rid of acne, if your skin isn’t very oily as it is, they can get rid of the good oil on your skin and dry you out which will only cause your skin to go into overdrive and produce more oil.

Try to combat your acne by using the three tips listed above. To learn more about how you can get a clearer complexion, contact Aura Med Spa today to schedule an appointment.

3 Myths About Botox Debunked

Botox® Cosmetic San Francisco, CABotox is one of the most popular things that we offer our patients here at Aura Med Spa, and that popularity isn’t going to die down anytime soon. By softening fine lines and wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes, Botox can temporarily restore your more youthful complexion. To help you better understand Botox and whether or not it’s right for you, we have created an article debunking three common myths about it. Read on to learn more.

Myth #1: It’s a Filler

One of the most common misconceptions that people have about Botox is that it is a filler. However, Botox works completely differently than fillers like Restylane and Juvederm. While fillers fill in the fine lines and wrinkles in the skin, Botox temporarily relaxes the muscles in the forehead which in turn softens the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Myth #2: It’s Just For Wrinkles

Although the primary use of Botox is to combat fine lines and wrinkles, it can also be used to treat a variety of other health related issues like chronic migraines, excessive underarm sweat, and more. In fact, Botox was initially used to treat strabismus.

Myth #3: It’s Only for People 60 Years and Up

Another common misconception that people have regarding Botox is that it is only for people who are over the age of 60. However, Botox can be used for individuals who are even as young as in their 20’s to help prevent against fine lines and wrinkles deepening.

If you are looking for a temporary way to get rid of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and forehead, consider getting Botox injections from Aura Med Spa. If you would like to learn more about whether or not Botox is right for you and your skin, contact Aura Med Spa today to schedule an appointment!

Kybella® San Francisco, CA

How to Get Rid of your ‘selfie chin’

Kybella® San Francisco, CAWhen it comes to managing your online presence, it’s natural to want to put your best face forward. The ‘selfie chin,’ otherwise known as a double chin, seems to take center stage with our vacation and day-to-day selfies alike. Kybella is an FDA approved nonsurgical option to get rid of that extra roll of fat under your chin. The Kybella shot is an alternative to liposuction, which is used to address a double chin.

Kybella works by using deoxycholic acid, a substance that your body naturally produces. It aids in absorbing and destroying fat cells. Kybella treatments vary from patient to patient. For instance, you may need a total of 12-20 injections administered during treatment. Two to three to six sessions over the course of several months may be necessary. The visit itself is quick, and the treatment usually takes only 15 minutes.

You will begin to notice a change after two to four treatments. It is important to understand that Kybella does not tighten the skin. Rather, it melts fat. After your treatments are completed, the results can last several years.

As with any surgical or nonsurgical treatment, be sure you are aware of any potential side effects or risks. The most common side effects a that patients experience with Kybella are numbness, swelling, pain, and bruising. These are a normal part of the healing process and will dissipate over time. In rare cases, the marginal mandibular nerve can be damaged, resulting in an off balance smile. Overtime, the nerve will heal, and you will regain control of your facial expressions.

Studies are underway to determine if Kybella can be used to zap fat cells in other regions of the body. Unfortunately, it can’t get rid of love handles or excess belly fat. At present, it is strictly permitted to be used underneath the chin and neck. Because Kybella is a cosmetic procedure, it is unlikely that insurance will cover it.

If you are looking to enhance your look and get rid of excess chin fat, call Aura Skin Spa today. You can reach our office at (415) 788-3800 to arrange a consultation to determine if Kybella is right for you.

A Simple way to Keep your Skin Hydrated this Summer

skin care San Francisco, CADoctors suspect about 75% of adults in the United States have some form of chronic dehydration. With a daily water recommendation of eight 8-ounce glasses of water, it can be difficult to accomplish. Certain foods hold particularly high water content and are a wonderful alternative to accomplishing your daily water intake. Food alone should never be a substitute for water, but it can certainly supplement your daily water intake. The following fruits and vegetables can help your skin and body feel more hydrated in the coming months.

Watermelon

This quintessential summer food is deliciously sweet and perfect for keeping your body hydrated. With a water content of 91.5%, watermelon is also one of the best sources of lycopenes, an antioxidant that fights cancer. Cut up a watermelon into bite sized squares and keep them stored in the fridge, on hand for when the midday munchies role around or the kids come home from school. Slice pieces of watermelon into a chilled glass of water for a refreshing drink.

Spinach

When lunch rolls around, pile spinach on your sandwich. Spinach has high levels of fiber, potassium, lutein, and folate. One cup of spinach gives you 15% of your daily recommended vitamin E. Vitamin E is a valuable antioxidant for shielding against free radicals.  If you don’t like spinach, no problem—spinach has little taste and is a fantastic addition to any smoothie. With a water content of 91.4%, don’t forget to add this versatile vegetable to your grocery list.

Broccoli

3 Lesser known ways to protect your skin this summer

skin care San Francisco, CAThe warmer temperature is driving us in droves to the beach, park, or golf course. All the Vitamin D the sun provides is excellent for your health, but you can get too much of a good thing. Here are three lesser-known tips to save your skin this summer and protect it from aging:

  1. The right sunscreen will make all the difference:  If you want to save your skin from the sun, buy a sunscreen that you love and make it handy. There are dozens of brands, so choose one that you like and put it next to your other toiletries, so you see it in the morning and remember to put it on. Do n’t forget to select a sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher. If you are genetically disposed to burn easily, have fair skin, or skin cancer in your family history, elect for 30 SPF or higher. Also, find a brand that has sufficient UVA protection. You can find this out by checking the ingredient list. If it includes ecamsule, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, sulisobenzone, oxybenzone, or avobenzone it will provide UVA protection. Remember, if you suffer from sensitive skin issues like rosacea, opt for sunscreens catered to kids, which are formulated to be more sensitive.
  2. Be mindful of makeup: Did you know that the type of makeup you put on each morning could act as a sun filter? Darker eye shadow colors and matte lipstick will naturally deflect some of the sun’s rays. On the other had, high gloss lipsticks or powders attract the sun and expose the skin more. To be safe, remember to apply a moisturizer with at least SPF 15 before adding makeup. Be sure not to forget your lips by applying a lip color or lip balm with an SPF factor.
  3. Dress with the sun in mind: Usually, when summer rolls around, we pull out the sundresses and shorts. However, if you know, you’ll be outside for an extra long time, select for materials that act as natural protectants to the skin. For instance, darker colors, fiber types, and dyes can all contribute to reflecting UV rays. For instance, tightly knit fabrics, nylon, and polyester work well at shielding the skin from the sun. Bleached cotton clothing, not as much.

Vascular Vein Treatment San Francisco, CA

What causes varicose veins?

Vascular Vein Treatment San Francisco, CAVaricose veins are a common condition characterized by bulging bluish veins that are visible just beneath the skin. Spider veins, or areas of swollen capillaries, are the superficial version of varicose veins. Varicose veins are usually safe but can cause tenderness, itchy skin, and swelling in the legs and feet. In severe cases, they may point to possible sites where blood clots may develop.

Women are twice as likely as men to develop varicose veins and 23% of Americans have them. What causes such a common and often painful condition? Ailments or conditions that place extreme weight on the abdomen or legs can result in varicose veins.

  1. Pregnancy: During pregnancy, the uterus will expand putting a strain on a particular vein on the right side of the body called the inferior vena cava. This, in turn, puts pressure on the veins in the legs.  Hormonal changes during pregnancy may also contribute to the development of varicose veins. If varicose veins form during pregnancy, they normally improve within the year after delivery.
  2. Obesity: Obesity can result in high blood pressure, which can cause undue strain on the legs. This excessive burden can lead to ulcers and skin alteration around the ankles.
  3. Chronic constipation: The Western diet is largely missing fiber rich foods. Overtime, the strain needed to move fiber deficient stools is so significant that there is an enormous amount of pressure placed on veins in the legs. The blood valves become slack and are unable to sustain blood movement, resulting in varicose veins.
  4. Family history: If you have a history of varicose veins in your family, you may likely develop them as well.
  5. Being sedentary: Standing or sitting for a long time is a notable risk factor for developing varicose veins. Without regular movement, blood cannot flow throughout your legs as well.
  6. Age: Age will naturally cause the efficiency of blood valves to diminish. As valves are less able to control the flow of blood, some blood will accumulate in the veins instead of being pushed toward the heart.

Injectable fillers San Francisco, CA

More (surprising) ways that fillers can improve your appearance

Injectable fillers San Francisco, CAInjectable fillers, such as Restylane and Juvederm, are quickly becoming some of the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatments, and our patients report being amazed at the way they can turn back the hands of time. If you’re used to having your injectable treatments to help fill hollows under your eyes or redefine your cheeks or jawline, you might be surprised to learn about some of the newest uses for your favorite procedure.

For chin wrinkles

Aging and sun damage can take their toll on the chin. The muscles in the chin also contribute to the wrinkly appearance of the bottom of the face, so Botox is a popular treatment for relaxing those muscles to help smooth out the chin. Horizontal lines in the mid-chin area, as well as wrinkles that extend up to the lip line, can be treated with fillers. Together, these popular injectables can smooth the creases and give the chin a stronger profile.

For thighs dents

Fillers can be used to treat dimples and divots on the backs of the thighs, often caused by cellulite and aging skin.  The filler can help lift the skin to improve the appearance of some superficial sagging and cellulite.

For hollow temples

As we age, fat is lost from the temples, causing them to be hollow and sunken. Fillers, such as Sculptra Aesthetic and Juvederm Voluma, can be used to replace that lost volume and give the face a more youthful contour.

For wrinkles on the elbows

Fillers can help the elbows appear smoother by filling out some of the lines and crevices that all that elbow bending can cause.

For earlobe creases

Maybe you don’t think much about your earlobes in your battle against aging, but they can look droopy, thin and wrinkly. Fillers can give back a more natural and youthful shape to the earlobes, as well as help prevent further stretching and widening of pierced earring holes.

For knee wrinkles

Injecting the fine, crepey lines on the knees with Sculptra Aesthetic can help smooth and soften them.

Botox can be the best treatment for modern life

Botox® CosmeticThere’s been a lot of discussion in print, broadcast and online about the effects that social media has had on the growth of cosmetic procedures. It seems that since we’re taking (and sharing) a lot more photos, we are more aware of our appearance flaws. Plus, we’re smiling and making various facial expressions for photos more often than at any time in history, and we all know that using our facial muscles is part of what causes wrinkles.

Luckily, we are also hearing and reading about the many procedures available that can help us look better — in pics and person. But all that exposure to information can be stressful, and stress takes a toll on the skin, further driving up our interest in anti-aging treatments. And for those of us who are spending more time than ever accessing information on our phones, we may be squinting to read it, which contributes to lines around the eyes.

It might seem like a vicious cycle, but Botox can be a solution, custom made for times like these.

Botox to the rescue
For some people reading this, they might be realizing they’re overdue for their Botox treatments. Call for your appointment today: (415) 788-3800.

If you haven’t yet discovered the benefits of Botox, are you finding yourself clicking on more articles about it? If so, you aren’t alone. Online searches and inquiries about Botox are steadily climbing, according to reports from Google and other search engines.

The steep growth in the use of Botox

It may have to do with the many additional ways the product is being employed to help us manage problems of modern life. More than just relaxing the lines and creases that form on the face, Botox has also been shown to have many other uses, including:

  • Helping to alleviate tension headaches and migraines
  • Reducing symptoms of over-active bladder
  • Halting sweat production in the armpits and palms
  • Treating nerve pain

More amazing news about Botox
New research suggests it may promote the production of elastin and collagen, which help make youthful skin tight, firm and flexible.

Lasers can safely and effectively remove unwanted hair

laser hair removalThere’s a fairly simple treatment that could help get you ready for summer weather, and now’s a great time to get started. Laser hair removal can be performed anywhere on the face and body, regardless of your skin type, and you won’t have to be self-conscious about unwanted hair again. Start your treatments by making an appointment today. Call  (415) 788-3800.

A brief explanation of how laser hair removal works

  • The laser emits a beam of high-intensity light that penetrates deep into the skin.
  • A hand-piece touches the skin to deliver the laser light.
  • This high-intensity light delivers a controlled amount of heat.
  • The heat is attracted to the pigment in hair follicles.
  • This allows the laser light to target and destroy the hair follicle
  • There is no damage to the surrounding skin.

The two different lasers we have at Aura are used specific to the patient’s skin type

  1. Candela GentleLASE,

This is a long-pulse alexandrite wavelength for fair skin.

  1. Cutera CoolGlide

This is a YAG wavelength ideal for the darker skin.

The number of necessary treatments also depends on you

Your skin color, hair coarseness and the laser used will determine how many treatments can give you the desired results. Most patients require six sessions at about four to eight-week intervals for effective reduction of hair, and additional sessions may be needed to achieve optimal results. Each treatment can take from a few minutes up to an hour, depending on the area being treated.

The time between treatments will depend on the areas you are treating

  • Face – four weeks
  • Bikini area– six weeks
  • Legs – eight weeks

The type of skin and hair you have will determine how many sessions you need

  • Lighter skin and darker hair can often require fewer sessions.
  • Darker skin may require more sessions.
  • Blond, red, gray or white hair doesn’t respond to laser treatment because there’s no pigment in the hair follicle to attract the laser heat.

Our cooling methods will help control any discomfort

We use specific methods designed to cool the skin and reduce discomfort:

  • The Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD)
  • Cold gel
  • Chill-tip hand-piece
