What you need to Know about Botox

Botox is a popular cosmetic treatment that is used to diminish facial wrinkles and creases. It is commonly used to reduce crow’s feet, lip lines, and frown lines. If you are considering Botox, here’s what you should know about what it can do for you and what to expect.

How a Botox procedure works

Botox is injected into specific muscles using a fine needle and works by blocking the signals between muscles and nerves that make a face contract. The result is a more smooth and relaxed look. Botox injections are commonly used for a variety of wrinkles including forehead lines, frown lines, lip lines, and the areas around the mouth and neck. Botox cannot reduce wrinkles created by sun damage, cigarette smoking, or gravity. This is because these wrinkles are not caused by facial contractions.

What can I expect from my Botox treatment?

A full Botox procedure takes mere minutes and can be done during your lunch break. You will not be able to see the full results of Botox injections until about one week after the procedure. Botox injections can last up to four months. As you routinely get Botox injections, the muscles are trained to relax, and treatments are needed less often.

Two weeks before your Botox appointment do not take any anti-inflammatory medications or aspirin. One week prior, avoid alcohol. These precautions will help reduce bruising.

Am I a good candidate for Botox?

If you are in general good health and want to reduce your facial wrinkles, Botox is an excellent option for you. If you are breastfeeding, pregnant, or have a neurological disease, you should not get Botox injections.

Insurance and Botox

Insurance does not typically cover Botox because it is a cosmetic procedure. If you have questions about your health coverage or need clarification on what it includes, contact your insurance company for more details.
