What Is Intense Pulsed Light™?

Intense Pulsed Light™ (IPL), known commonly as Photorejuvenation or PhotoFacial can treat a variety of skin conditions without disruption to the skin’s surface – hence a no “downtime” procedure. Treatments are performed in just 20-30 minutes with most patients returning immediately to work or their daily activities similar to other procedures such as laser hair removal.

This FDA-cleared patented technology treats age spots, sun-induced freckles, symptoms of rosacea, unsightly veins, fine lines, large pores, and other skin blemishes.

Why Choose Aura Skin Spa?

Technology matters. Aura is proud to feature the Lumenis One Laser System – the Gold Standard for IPL technology. Lumenis invented IPL and continues to perfect it. Other practices may promote cheaper, lower-powered technology, however, there is a visible difference in results.

At Aura, we begin with an in-depth skin consultation using Visia®, our state-of-the-art skin analysis system. Through this innovative approach, our physicians and registered nurses will help determine if IPL is the right treatment for you.

How Does An Intense Pulsed Light™ Work?

IPL delivers a special range of wavelengths of light in customizable pulses through a sapphire tip gently onto your skin. The light is absorbed either superficially by broken capillaries and dark pigment or deeper by larger vessels and collagen. Dilated capillaries coagulate, pigmented lesions darken and then slough off and new collagen fibers are laid down, giving the skin a renewed and more youthful appearance.

IPL treats the damaged superficial layer of the skin while delivering thermal energy to deeper tissue. Clinical studies support a positive effect on collagen production, which helps firm and tighten the skin.

Am I A Candidate For IPL Laser Treatment?

Most skin types are a candidate for IPL. However, the darkest skin types may not be a candidate. Aura offers free consultations with our physicians and nurse practitioners to help determine if IPL is the right treatment for you.

What Can I Expect During Intense Pulsed Light™ Treatment?

The most common areas treated with IPL are the face, neck, chest, and hands. Generally, each patient can expect the following:

  • Treatments are performed in the privacy and comfort of Aura Skin Spa, by a physician, registered nurse or nurse practitioner.
  • Safety eyeglasses are worn to protect the physician or nurse practitioner and the patient’s eyes from the laser light during the procedure.
  • Patients arrive approximately 20 minutes early for the application of topical lidocaine cream.

  • A cold gel is applied to the area being treated.
  • The smooth cold surface (sapphire tip) of the Lumenis One IPL hand-piece is gently touched against the skin and pulses of light are applied.
  • A slight stinging sensation is felt with each IPL light pulse.
  • This is repeated over the entire face or the surface area that is being treated.
  • The procedure could take as little as 20 minutes to as long as an hour, depending on the area or areas being treated.
  • The treated area usually becomes pink or red and may last from a few minutes to several hours and is relieved with the application of ice, cooling gels or other calming agents.
  • Brown spots usually get darker and in a few days naturally slough-off or gradually appear lighter.

Is A PhotoFacial Painful?

The degree of discomfort varies with each patient, depending on his/her pain threshold. Some patients may feel a slight discomfort with the laser pulse, sometimes described as the snapping of a rubber band on the skin.

This discomfort is minimized by topical anesthesia such as lidocaine cream or ointment that is applied to the area being treated approximately 20 minutes before the procedure.

How Many Photofacials Sessions Will I Need?

Depending on the number of conditions you are treating, and the severity of the individual problem, a series of three to five treatment sessions may be recommended. By dividing the full program into a series of treatments, PhotoFacial provides gradual improvement with very low risk and excellent long-term results.

Why Choose Intense Pulsed Light™ Treatment?

It also stimulates collagen production and helps to improve fine lines and large pore size.
