The cool crisp days of fall usher in more than some of the biggest holidays of the year. They can also bring dryness, itchiness, and tightness to the skin. Unfortunately for many, the issue is more than just dryness. In extreme cases severely dry skin can result in eczema, a condition in which the skin is inflamed. Here are some basic tips that you can utilize daily to guard your face, feet, and hands, against the effects of cooler temperatures.
Don’t skip the moisturizer
Your favorite moisturizer may work wonders in the spring, but changing seasons call for a change in products. Opt for a moisturizer that is oil based instead of water based. Oil based moisturizers, or “ointment” products, act as a protective shield on your skin that enable greater moisture retention. Be aware of oil-based moisturizers that will clog your skin. Non-clogging oils include mineral oil, avocado oil, almond oil, or primrose oil.
Have sunscreen on hand
Sunscreen isn’t only for the summer. A fall or winter sun or the glare of bright white snow can damage your skin as easily as a hot July day. Keep sunscreen in your bag or purse to reapply throughout the day on your face, neck, and hands.
Invest in a quality humidifier
The dry hot air of central heating feels amazing on those blustery fall days. But it can take quite a toll on your skin. Put a humidifier in your home to get more moisture in the air. This will help stop your skin from getting itchy or dry. If you can, consider getting several humidifiers to place throughout your home.
Revaluate your daily facial routine
If you suffer from unusually dry skin, fall is definitely the time to back off of using masks or any alcohol based astringents or toners. Instead opt for a mask that touts itself as “deeply hydrating”. Keep in mind that clay based masks usually pull moisture out of the face instead of hydrating it. Also, try a milder foaming cleanser or cleansing milk.
