Everything you Want (and don’t want) to Know about Cellulite

Cottage cheese skin, dimpled skin, orange peel skin, and the mattress phenomenon. These are all terms used to describe the severity of cellulite. Cellulite happens when fat deposits emerge between the connective tissue underneath the skin. Both men and women can get cellulite but it is far more common in men. It impacts 80-90 percent of women and typically affects the buttocks and thigh regions.

You can possibly prevent cellulite

Studies show that a low fat diet can help prevent severe cellulite. Regular exercise and a lack of smoking can also contribute to helping quell the occurrence of cellulite.

There are different grades of cellulite

Mild cellulite is typified by an orange peel appearance to the skin along with 1-4 topical depressions. The skin may also appear to be sagging or draped. Moderate cellulite comes in the form of five to nine depressions in the skin and has the look of cottage cheese with the skin moderately draped. The last and most severe form takes on a “mattress” look and has around 10 deep depressions along with extremely draped skin.

The cause of cellulite is unknown

Science is unsure of what exactly is to blame for cellulite formation. As mentioned previously, it is in part due to the relationship between the connective tissue and the dermatological layer of the skin. In this layer of skin, women have fat cells and connective tissues that are designed vertically. For men, it is a crisscross appearance. This variation in fat and connective tissue design may be responsible for why cellulite is more noticeable in women.

Cellulite typically begins to forma after age 25

The incidence of cellulite increases with age, but there are other factors that can make it more likely. Genetics, lifestyle choices, and hormones may all contribute to the formation of cellulite. For instance, individuals who make fat, carbohydrates and salt a major part of their diet are more susceptible to cellulite formation. Cellulite is far more common in individuals who are overweight, but can also develop in thin people as well.
