In this day and age of technology, it is difficult to imagine that you may need a surgical procedure to correct signs of aging such as upper eyelid hooding or crepey skin around the eyes. In many cases, we’re finding that men and women have numerous alternatives to surgery if that is their preference. One of the options that we offer in our San Francisco med spa, Thermage, is a promising modality for eyelid rejuvenation without surgery.
What Thermage can do for the Eyes
The eyes change in a number of ways when we age. While Thermage is not indicated for concerns like crow’s feet (that’s a job for Botox), we may suggest this treatment for:
- Upper and lower eyelid wrinkling and crepey skin around the eyes.
- Upper eyelid hooding due to mild to moderate laxity of the skin.
- Tired-looking eyes.
- Eyelid maintenance after eyelid surgery.
How it Works
Thermage is one of several devices that have been developed around radiofrequency energy. This particular form of energy penetrates the uppermost tissues of the skin to affect the strands of collagen the lie beneath. When existing strands are heated, they immediately constrict, which tightens the skin. Further improvement occurs as healthy new collagen floods the area to support remodeling.
Proof is in the Numbers
Of course, the biggest question about any non-surgical treatment is “does it work?” According to clinical studies, 94% of people who choose Thermage for eyelid rejuvenation are happy they did. In one study, 87% percent of patients surveyed reported noticing immediate improvement in the tightness of the eyelids. 92% reported satisfactory tightening at the six-month mark after treatment. Diagnostic testing of collagen stores also confirmed collagen strengthening in the months following Thermage.
There are Exceptions
Perhaps the unpredictability of any treatment is what can make the whole process of anti-aging so frustrating. When it comes to Thermage, we do know that treatment is best suited to the tightening of the skin on the upper eyelids. Under eye puffiness does not seem to improve with radiofrequency, though lines and wrinkles may decrease somewhat. Excessive hooding, as well, may require surgery for full correction. We are careful to perform a thorough consultation with each patient so that we may develop the most appropriate treatment plan for each.
